Teaching science and nutrition in Vanuatu

In 2011, I spent 6 months teaching science and nutrition to Year 9 students at Ranwadi high school in the remote island of Pentecost, Vanuatu. In this role, I was responsible for planning and delivering science lessons that adhered to the national curriculum, co-ordinating the science department with the Junior Head of Science and helping to oversee the running of national-level exams. I also worked with the school nurse to inform the design of a comprehensive sexual education problem that was culturally and religiously sensitive. Another highlight was helping the school to implement a sustainable fishpond to provide much-needed protein to the diet of the students and wider community.
